Sun Dogs!

Today, we had a rare treat at our home. School is closed, the University is closed, we're at home, and yesterday's storm turned into today's snow-blowing.

The fun thing about blowing snow in Nebraska is that Nebraska blows back, creating beautiful drifts and shapes (and blowing all your neighbors' snow into your yard - see proof below. QED.)

After I finished removing my (and my neighbors') snow from the driveway I looked up into the sky and, voila, Sun Dogs.

Sun Dogs are a very rare atmospheric phenomenon where small particles of ice suspended in the air create a halo rainbow effect around the sun. Usually they are only seen at high altitude from the window of an airplane.

The fact that we could see them today is a testament to three things: 1. The amount of snow that fell, 2. The ferocity of the wind, and 3. How frakin' cold it is.

Click on image to enlarge, it really is beautiful.

Beautiful. We are also having an unusually cold week. My begonias died, but I can't complain to much. There isn't any snow to shovel at the house, but there was some on the Santa Cruz mountains.
